I am a command line geek and loving Windows 2008 server even though I would much prefer Linux over any Wndows OS anyday.

All corporates work with Windows and like it or not, MS owns Linux on that. Erm .. Maybe with the exception for Webservers. Apache and PostGreSQL is much more flexible. Unless someone decides to buy ORACLE instead of PostGreSQL.

p.s. PostGreSQL might be free but if you need a corporate version with full support that cost you as much as ORACLE, in cases more for customisation.

Anyway this is an extract from MS KB, nothing original (except for some special steps I added) about it but nice to know if you’re working with Windows 2008 Terminal Server…. Here goes …

This step-by-step article describes how to use the change user command to switch a Terminal Services server to Install mode.

You must put a Terminal Services server in Install mode to install or remove programs on the server. You can put a Terminal Services server in Install mode either by using the Add/Remove Programs tool in Control Panel to add or remove a program, or by using thechange user command at a command prompt. This article describes how to use the change user command.

To Switch Terminal Services to Install Mode
When you want to add or remove programs, put the Terminal Services server in Install mode. To do this:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type change user /install, and then press ENTER. The following message appears:
User session is ready to install applications.
4. Type exit, and then press ENTER.
5. Add or remove the programs that you want.
6. Install software via Control Panel > Install Application for Terminal Services (this is similar to old Windows Add/Remove Programs > Add New Program)
7. If you need to activate any software I would recommend to put Terminal server in Install Mode and then activate it. This ensures all registry modification will take place without much hassle.

To Switch Terminal Services to Execute Mode
When you are finished adding or removing programs, return the Terminal Services server to Execute mode. To do this:
1. Click Start, and then click Run.
2. In the Open box, type cmd, and then click OK.
3. At the command prompt, type change user /execute, and then press ENTER. The following message appears:

User session is ready to execute applications.

4. Type exit, and then press ENTER.

Hope this helps.

I wrote a few documents on these at work which are more visual but this is as simpler as it can be in raw text.
