Netetique or Netiquette

Netiquette, a portmanteau of “net etiquette”, is a set of social conventions that facilitate interaction over networks, ranging from Usenet and mailing lists to blogs and forums. These rules were described in IETF RFC 1855.
In short it’s the etiquette which people should follow in internet.
I have always tried to follow Netetique. I always liked Hasib’s post/emails for this. It’s just that one can write something without breaking the barrier of social etiquette even when you need to be rude or say something inappropriate. It’s not really that important for many and I guess most people would shrug when reading this post, but trust me, it is important. Just finish your studies and start working in a corporate environment, you’ll find out how important it is to be able to write an email or application without making a mistake and follow the right format.
Yes, of course there are times you can break these rules and these are not like a set of rules that must be followed. When chatting in MSN, Yahoo, ICQ or IRC Server it really doesn’t matter what you’re typing in as long it makes sense. The only time I found it really disturbing when people go like “So you wanting to dance with me?”. I am sure you know people like that. It’s pretty clear what they’re saying but the language and grammatical mistake just kills it. I was a chat freak for 10 years and I always found if you keep it decent it works and you do make friends. I made a few good friends through chatting and the only reason was probably they being decent people.
If you’re writing something try sticking to one language. It just makes other people’s lives a lot easier to read. When anyone goes like “Where is my kata chamuch?” in any environment, no matter who you are, you just lost your respect.
Then there is this group of people, who would write things in CAPS. Hope they know CAPS means they are shouting and trying to make a point. I work in a IT company as a manager. Every time I receive an email with CAPS on, I answer with utter coldness and as less salutation as possible. Same goes for people who highlight and colorcode their text thinking that they’re making a point. Not really! They are just being rude with or without knowing.
The worst part of Internet is you dont know who you’re talking to, what they are or how old they are. People act smart and try to be a know-it-all even if they have absolutely no idea what others are talking about. I am a member of a few forums like MSDN, UbuntuForums, Intuit etc. I have seen people bad-mouthing and next thing they know, they are either blocked or no one answers their posts anymore. Being cynical is fun sometimes, but its better to keep it to yourself when you’re in internet. Just because no one knows you doesnt mean you have the right to do or say whatever you want or criticize everything.
I can understand I sound a bit snobbish, but I am not trying to. I find it disturbing and since its a blog and I am supposed to write whatever I’m thinking, so I took to opportunity for venting.
Have fun everyone and goodnight.
